Sand Mountain is a huge sand dune. The elevation of Sand Mountain in Nevada fluxuates between 4,000 feet and 4,700 feet. Sand Mountain is a depositional feature open to the public. The dunes here are often called "Singing sand Dunes" because of the way they rub together and the shape of the sand particles when you are coming down from the top. You can also here this sound when the wind is blowing intensely.
Sand Mountain started forming 10,000 years ago as a result from glaciers. The glacier runoff formed an ancient lake(this lake was 800 feet deep at some points), and after the lake dried up its delta started collecting particles. It kept building higher and higher until it reached its present day height. This site is a great place to visit! |
